Cat 6 supports Gigabit up to 100m and can handle 10Gbps over short distances (up to 55m). For home networking, Cat 6 is the sweet spot — Cat 5e works for Gigabit too but Cat 6 has better shielding. Cat 6a or Cat 7 needed for reliable 10Gbps.
