Notes & Compatibility
4K60 SDR; 4K60 HDR at 4:2:0 chroma subsampling, which is what streaming sources use natively. HDR10, Dolby Vision (Profile 5) and HLG, HLG added in tvOS 11.2. Dolby Atmos arrived in tvOS 12 as DD+ Atmos; there is no lossless TrueHD bitstreaming. HDMI CEC works. No eARC and no ARC, and no optical audio output, so sound leaves this box only over HDMI. Apple’s own spec sheet calls the port HDMI 2.0a, so 18 Gbps is the ceiling: a Premium High Speed cable covers everything it can output and an Ultra High Speed 48 Gbps cable buys nothing. No USB port of any kind. The USB-C service port on the 2015 Apple TV HD was dropped here, so a stuck unit is restored over the network rather than by cable. Power is a detachable figure-8 cord. Bluetooth 5.0, 802.11ac Wi-Fi with MIMO. Discontinued April 2021.
