Four-pole 3.5mm extension cable carrying stereo audio and a microphone on one plug, for headsets on phones, tablets, laptops and handheld consoles. The extra ring is what separates it from an ordinary aux extension — a 3-pole TRS lead silently drops the mic.

Count the black rings on the plug: three rings = 4-pole TRRS (mic works), two rings = 3-pole TRS (mic does not). CTIA is the modern pinout; OMTP gear (older Nokia, some Sony) needs a crossover adapter. Beyond about 5m an unamplified mic signal starts picking up hum — keep runs short or move to USB.
