Apple’s four-display configuration on M4 Max is three 6K@60Hz screens over Thunderbolt plus one 4K@144Hz over HDMI, so the HDMI port’s 8K@60Hz / 4K@240Hz ceiling is a single-display figure rather than what it carries with all four running. Thunderbolt 5 is rated up to 120Gb/s: a Thunderbolt 4 or USB4 cable will connect and work, but it caps the link well below that, so the speed is only there with a Thunderbolt 5 cable.
