Sony PlayStation 3 (Original Fat, 2006)

The original 'Fat' PS3 is the most port-dense PlayStation Sony ever shipped: HDMI 1.3a, the proprietary Sony AV Multi Out, optical TOSLINK, four front USB 2.0 ports on launch CECHA/CECHB units, and Gigabit Ethernet. Launch 60GB (CECHA) and 80GB (CECHB) models add a hidden bay of three flash card readers — Memory Stick, SD/MMC and CompactFlash — for direct media import; later 40GB/80GB CECHE/CECHK/CECHL revisions drop the card readers and step USB down to two ports. The IEC C14 power inlet (standard 3-pin kettle lead) distinguishes the Fat from every later PS3 revision, which switch to the smaller IEC C8 figure-8.

Launch CECHA/CECHB Fat PS3: HDMI 1.3a, AV Multi Out, optical TOSLINK, 4× USB 2.0, Gigabit Ethernet, and three flash card readers.

Available Ports

Connector Quantity Label Notes
HDMI 1.4 (Type A – Standard) 1 HDMI OUT (rear) Spec is HDMI 1.3a on Fat hardware (no native 1.4 features such as ARC or 3D). Listed under the approved HDMI 1.4 tier as the closest available approximation.
Sony AV Multi Out (PlayStation Family) 1 AV MULTI OUT (rear) Composite, RGB SCART, component (YPbPr) and VGA cables all use this same port. Cannot output simultaneously with HDMI.
Optical TOSLINK (S/PDIF) 1 DIGITAL OUT (rear) Dolby Digital, DTS and 7.1 LPCM where the DSP allows. Retained on every PS3 revision.
USB Type-A (USB 2.0) 4 USB 1–4 (front) Four front USB 2.0 ports on CECHA/CECHB launch hardware. Reduced to 2 on CECHE (40GB) and later Fat revisions.
RJ-45 (Gigabit Ethernet) 1 LAN (rear) 10/100/1000 BASE-T autosensing. Wi-Fi 802.11b/g is also present on CECHA01 / CECHB01.
SD Card Slot (UHS-I) 1 SD / MMC (behind front flap) Reads SD, MiniSD (with adapter) and MMC. UHS-I tier listed as the closest approved match; actual hardware predates UHS speeds. Launch CECHA/CECHB only.
IEC C14 (3-Pin Power Inlet) 1 AC IN Standard 3-pin grounded IEC C14 'kettle lead' inlet. Unique to the Fat — the Slim and Super Slim use the smaller IEC C8 figure-8 inlet.

Notes & Compatibility

Ports listed reflect the CECHA01 / CECHB01 launch configuration. Later Fat revisions step changes: USB drops from 4 to 2 ports starting with CECHE (40GB); the three flash card readers (Memory Stick, SD/MMC, CompactFlash) are removed starting with CECHE; the rear ports otherwise stay the same through CECHL. HDMI is HDMI 1.3a in spec — mapped to the closest approved tier ‘HDMI 1.4 (Type A – Standard)’. The Fat uses an IEC C14 inlet (placeholder connector pending creation) rather than the C8 figure-8 inlet used on the Slim and Super Slim. PS1/PS2 backwards compatibility is hardware-based on CECHA01 only (Emotion Engine + GS), software-based on CECHB01, and PS1-only on the CECHE+ revisions.
